Airlines Increase Freight Shipments From Portland

PORTLAND, (AP) Two airlines disclosed Friday night they have stepped up freight shipments here to Alaska because of a warehousemen's strike in Seattle.

Pacific Northern Air Lines said that since the strike began it has scheduled five freight shipments a week to Alaska.

The latest shipment came Friday night when 4,000 pounds of produce, including crates of lettuce, left for Alaska, sales manager Walter Morgan said.

The other line is Alaska Airline, whose Portland manager Bob St. Helen said his firm's DC6C craft were carrying extra freight loads.

St. Helen said the latest flight was Thursday, when a plane left for Alaska with 2,500 pounds of produce, furniture and automobile parts.

The cargo originally had been scheduled to leave from Seattle, he said.

Both lines said they probably will put on extra flights to handle the increase in Alaska-bound cargo.
