WASHINGTON-(NNPA)- Senator C. Weyland Brooks of Illinois, chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, announced Saturday that he has scheduled a meeting of his committee for Tuesday afternoon to inquire into the rejection of the application of Louis R. Lautier, correspondent for the Atlanta Daily World and chief of the Negro newspaper publishers association news service, for admission into the congressional press galleries.
Lautier was notified March 4 by the standing committee of correspondents that his application had been rejected by a vote of four to one after a personal hearing.
In appealing to Senator Brooks for a review of his case by the Senate Rules Committee Lautier charged that race was the decisive factor in his rejection.
RELEASES STATEMENT
In a statement released for publication Sunday, Senator Brooks said to provide an opportunity for a full membership of the committee for Tuesday, March 18, at two p. m. At that time all interested and affected parties will be asked to appear and give their testimony.
The rules governing the senate press gallery provide in effect that all requests for admission thereto shall be referred to the standing committee of correspondents of the gallery composed of correspondents who have the responsibility of passing upon such application for membership in the case of Louis R. Lautier, correspondent for the Atlanta Daily World and chief of the Negro newspaper publishers association. Membership was denied. It is this case that will be reviewed by the senate committee on rules and administration.
Senator Brooks also said the committee will inquire into charges that colored senate employees have been denied the right to eat in the restaurant in the capitol senate office building provided for senate employees. "These charges," he added, "will be thoroughly investigated."
