Full Text
The notice to a correspondent in the last refugee paper respecting L.'s remarks on the Oration delivered on the 4th inst. is meanly insidious. There is no kind of probability that any such communication was ever made to the refugee Mercury jobbers; but that that article was a sheer fabrication, in order, if possible, to intimidate the author of the Oration, and to induce him to decline a publication of it.
But after asserting that parson Shaw never wrote in their paper (which by the bye was no doubt parson Shaw's own assertion, as the writer of the paragraph which contained it) what subterfuges, and direct barefaced falsehoods will they not be guilty of. For let it be distinctly understood, that it can be incontrovertibly proved, that parson Shaw has wrote for the refugee paper, and has shewn his pieces before they were published. He is, therefore, by his own deliberate act, completely precluded from exercising on this occasion any tricks of evasion or equivocation.
As to the Oration; it was a good one, such an one as did honor to the occasion, to the thronged and respectable auditory to which it was spoken, and to the speaker; such an one as we could wish to see in print, that the visages of Speculative worth, & conceited excellency might be set with an immortal blush, and an interminable conviction of the vanity of political arrogance, and a spirit of domination.
