The new office set-up recently completed in the Administration building is admirably conceived and executed. One enters the bursar's office from the main corridor.
A smaller hall runs in front of the bursar's office, a second office, and the president's office, and ends in the secretary's office.
Every room in the dormitories is being plastered, painted, and refloored. Every room in the girls dormitory has a stove. The dean of women feels that sometimes 25 minutes of heat means the difference between health and sickness to a girl. The heat bill is only a few dollars more than formerly.
A combination auditorium and gymnasium will be erected on the campus at Seventeenth and Bishop. Plans are being worked out by which this building will be available for all veterans in Greater Little Rock Colleges. This building has been given and will be transported to the campus by the Federal Works Agency. It will be erected by the College.
While the increase and improvement in equipment is the noteworthy characteristic of the new Arkansas Baptist College, the institution is also endeavoring to match this with improved personnel. A number of the teachers have put in time in study toward higher degrees this summer. Mrs. Mary R. Ewell, shorthand and typewriting, has been studying at Columbia University, New York; C. F. Taylor, mathematics, at the University of California; Miss Vina M. Phillips, science, and Mrs. A. J. Jones, home economics, at the University of Wisconsin;
Mrs. S C. Williams, English, University of Chicago;
Mrs. Hazel King, home economics, is also studying at one of the large universities.
Among the few new faces on the faculty will be that of a new dean, M. B. Williams, a well-known and gifted Little Rock boy.
Williams graduated from Philander Smith College and has done considerable additional study. He recently finished Virginia Union Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity Degree. He has had experience teaching in public school, as inspector in the ordnance plant during the war, as on a considerable scale, and is at a volunteer social service worker present pastor of a large Baptist church in Virginia and teacher in one of the public schools. It is felt that he will be a welcome addition to Arkansas Baptist College and to Little Rock.
O. R. Meadors, A. B. from Southern University, Louisiana, and graduate student of the University of Southern California, comes as teacher of science and is the new coach.
Old citizens who went to the chilly office and welcomed President Coggs during his first winter will remember that the salary budget for 1937-1938 included $5437.50 for eleven teachers. Approximately 50 percent of this amount was actually paid.
The salary budget for the past year included $36,829 for the 23 teachers, which was paid in full. Then, the new president with difficulty mustered up a semblance of a student body and could hardly show a good high school. Today Arkansas Baptist College offers four years of college training in addition to the high school. The present status is that the first two years of the college are approved for certification of students for teacher's license. It is the plan of the administration to make sufficient improvement to justify the accreditation of the third and fourth years of college by the close of the present year. The minimum requirements for operation funds have already been exceeded.
