A new variation of the old sawdust swindle has just been uncovered in New York. Country folks, pay attention: It is based on an advertisement which has appeared in country papers for some time past, saying that a home was wanted for an orphan girl, that the child had an annual income, half of which would be paid to any responsible family in the country that would adopt her and give her a comfortable home. Applicants were instructed to address a certain box, New York city, and invited to send fifty cents for a photograph of the little girl. It is stated that the advertiser received over one hundred letters daily, enclosing half a dollar for the photograph.
