Full Text

A DAMPER. After the prolonged cheers of the populace had subsided, which arose from the presentation on the 5th of Capt. Stein, on the stage erected for the President and his suite, Hon. Levi Woodbury brought forward another gentleman, and presented him with an address of this import: 'Allow me to introduce to you one with whom most of you are familiar, the Hon. Henry Hubbard, late Governor of our State—the firm supporter and defender of the principles you advocate' The cheers were few and faint. The Curry letter, and a host of evil spirits which have had existence from the days of the Hartford Convention to the moment when in the Baltimore Convention Mr Hubbard brought forward the name of James K. Polk for the Presidency, rose up like a mist before the vision, and seemed to check the utterance of those cheers which had just been raised for the good fortune of one poor soldier who had returned alive, although wounded, from fighting the battles of the Polk administration. Judge Woodbury was unfortunate in this expression. It was doubtless a lapsus linguae, which he regrets no less than his political partizans -Portsmouth Journal.
