Full Text

Jan. 20. The following melancholy event we received yesterday, in a letter from a friend in the north of Ireland:--An officer, of a suspicious temper, about a fortnight since, as he was dressing himself, threw aside a pair of garters, and his wife asked him whether he meant to wear them any more? he answered in the negative. She then told the footman he might have them: This instantly struck the husband with jealousy, which he concealed, however, until the Sunday following; when, observing his wife give the servant some other trifle that was thrown by as unfit for use, he immediately loaded her with reproaches, turned the servant out of the room, and murdered his wife before she comprehended what he meant. He no sooner saw her dead, but he was struck, that giving the garters and the other trifle might be mere chance, and she by no means criminal, on which a new fit of enthusiasm was kindled, and he wrote the following short note:--"On account of a slight and groundless suspicion, I slew my wife; and to punish the author of so black and base an action, I have slain myself;" which he did by firing a bullet through his brain; and the noise alarming the servant, he rushed in, and saw both his master and mistress weltering in their blood!

Event Details

An officer, suspicious by nature, became jealous when his wife gave his discarded garters to the footman. He concealed it until the following Sunday, when he saw her give another trifle to the servant, leading him to reproach her, eject the servant, and murder her. Realizing it might have been innocent, he wrote a note confessing his error and killed himself. The servant discovered both bodies.
