Full Text

The British House of Lords has lately passed a bill for the retirement of infirm and superannuated bishops; not a general bill, but one providing for two special cases. The Bishop of London has had a severe paralytic attack, and the Bishop of Durham is nearly blind. Both have signified a willingness to resign, if they can receive adequate retiring pensions; and the House of Lords has met with a great deal of difficulty in finding law and precedents for the case. Even the Bench of Bishops was divided in opinion. It is mentioned as something curious, that there is not an example in the history of the Church of England, of the resignation of any bishop, since the reformation.
