Full Text
From the Army of the Potomac.
New York, Sept. 12.
The Herald's special has the following account of the capture of a line of rebel pickets in front of Petersburg on the 10th inst:
At an early hour this morning, by a skillful manoeuvre, handsomely executed, a portion of the enemy's picket line was seized, where it was in very close proximity to ours. The position was on a piece of commanding ground near one of our field works. It was held by a heavy line of pickets which had their abattis for us, and Gen. Hancock ordered the line entrenched. The ground was desirable; the enemy's pickets to be quietly captured, and our own advanced to the position which they occupied. Accordingly at one o'clock this morning, a portion of De Trobriand's brigade, Mott's division, surprised the rebel line and swept in over one hundred prisoners. Our pickets were then advanced to the captured point. Only a few musketry shots were fired, or the operation was over in a minute. Subsequently the enemy's pickets at adjacent points, and his artillery in his works, in that portion of the line, fired several shots, and occasional firing was kept up on both sides during the night.
