Full Text

Tom Murphy in a recent letter said: "I did not give the President his house, nor contribute a cent towards its purchase, and so far as I know and believe he purchased and paid for it with his own money." Just at this time Alexander T. Stewart, the well known and highly respected merchant of New York, is called upon the stand, and he states that a subscription paper, for a fund to buy a Long Branch cottage to be presented to President Grant, was presented to him for a subscription of $5,000, to complete the whole amount. On this paper were the names of Thomas Murphy, Grant's Collector at New York; John Hoey, and three or four more, for $5,000 each.

Does Thomas Murphy mean to say he did not pay his subscription after putting his name to the paper? That would be far worse than giving Grant that cottage which he now rents.
