SCHOOL AFFAIRS.

The Board of School Trustees, of Maurice River township, held their yearly meeting on Tuesday, May 25th, at the Leesburg public School House--A. R. Jones, County Superintendent, Chairman, and W. A. Ashmead, Secretary.

Districts represented- Port Elizabeth, No. 2; Leesburg, No. 3: Maurice River, No. 4; Ewing's Neck, No. 5, and Belle Plain No. 8.

Favorable reports of the condition of the schools in the above townships for the past year were given. Education is becoming more extended and improved plans of instruction more general and consistent.

Mr. Jones urged the trustees to take additional interest in their school affairs and the cause of education, extending further help to the teachers, and in unison with the friends of education, to encourage the instructors of youths by all means in their power. Teachers, as a class of workers, need more encouragement, sympathy and respect. Too frequently a few dollars difference in point of salary results in the procuring of a teacher whose defects in teaching, or influence, is unmeasurable. No position in life is more trying, or demanding more tact.

Mr. Jones has given his whole time to the superintendency; making about 300 visits; traveling 1400 miles; forming 3 districts and writing out the lines of many, the old ones being very imperfect, and requiring much care and trouble to arrange. The apportioning of school moneys, county corresponding, visiting schools, lecturing, advising, &c,, all for the enormous sum of $686. He records also the condition of each school, and each teacher's success.

In the average payment of male teachers' monthly salary, Downe township stands No. 1, being $45, and the lowest in the average payment of female teachers being $18 per month. Greenwich township stands No. 1 in the average payment of female teachers being $27 per month. The lowest salary paid to any female teacher in the county is in Deerfield township. The lowest salary paid to any male teacher in the county is in Maurice River township. The highest paid to any female teacher in the county is in Landis township, being $44 per month; however, this is not the average payment for Landis.
