Full Text
In the year 1821 Mr. McDuffie, of South Carolina, exclaimed, 'Have we not enjoyed all the happiness which it is in the power of government to confer? Where is the man that has felt the oppressive arm of the General Government? In the whole history of its progress you cannot point to one single act of oppression. It has wrested from no man his property, it has deprived no man of his liberty.'
Strange as it may seem these were the sentiments of George McDuffie. They are true and patriotic sentiments, and worthy of a liberal statesman. But mark the change. This gentleman now publicly declares the progress of our government to be a history of wanton usurpations, and unequalled oppression. The South, the generous, the patriotic South he exclaims, is ruined, by the desperate policy of the nation. it has wrested from us our property and deprived us of our rights, 'and we must resist the power of the General Government. As the sentiments of Mr. McDuffie are so different now, from those expressed in 1821, we may reasonably question either in his patriotism, or liberal judgment.
