One of the Most Shocking Cases of Self-destruction on Record.
[Special Dispatch St. Louis Globe-Democrat.]
Toledo, O., July 22.-The death of Miss Emily Wetmore, daughter of Captain Wetmore, in this county, reported briefly in these dispatches Saturday, proves to be one of the most shocking cases of self-destruction on record. She was a young lady of great personal beauty and many personal charms. It seems that Saturday, having finished the usual round of morning duties in the house (they live on a large farm), she secured a razor belonging to one of the workmen and went to her room to destroy herself. Shutting herself in, but without locking the door, she bared her left arm to its shoulder, then with the razor in her right hand cut an awful gash, severing the arteries of her left wrist, and as the blood spurted out laid herself down on the bed to await death, but it was too tardy, and she again drew the weapon across the fair, plump arm, higher up, between the elbow and shoulder, and severed the arteries again with two awful gashes. At this moment her younger sister, Mary, happened to come into the room and found her in a terrible condition, apparently dying. She bounded from the room, found her father, and sent him in haste to Emily's room. He arrived just in time to see her die. She only said: "I did it, father; just let me die." and was dead. No cause can be assigned for the deed by the family. It is said that when younger (she was twenty-six) she had a sweetheart-a Buffalo gentleman of high connections-and they were thought to be engaged, but somehow the match was broken off. It was, however, more probably the result of temporary insanity.
