AN AWFUL DEATH.
While Looking Down an Elevator Shaft a Negro Has His Neck Broken.
A middle-aged negro met a horrible death at Ensley City yesterday morning.
The negro was employed at No. 2 furnace with the boilermakers' force and had been sent up on the cold blast main to secure a rope. Instead of coming down, as he should. he looked down the elevator shaft. While doing so he noticed the elevator in the opposite shaft coming up and evidently forgetting the fact that the one in the shaft where he was standing. was coming down, failed to move and the down-coming elevator struck the back of his head with terrible force. breaking his neck.
Before the elevator could be stopped his body was dragged down in the narrow space between the elevator and wall and then thrown to the ground, twenty feet or more below. He was horribly mangled and was dead when picked up.
