"God sends trials and tribulations to test us. But he arms us against them with hope and faith and dreams. Nothing is ever lost until they are abandoned, and then everything is lost. My boy, don't ever let anything take away your hope and faith and dreams."
Those words, uttered to Ralph Bunche by his mother when he was a boy of 12 in Albuquerque, N. M., constitute "the best advice I ever had," he says, in the March Reader's Digest.
The Nobel Prize winner and United Nations Under-secretary writes, "I have had reason to recall my mother's words many times since, and they have served me well."
Bunche knew the wounds of racial prejudice at an early age. When a high-school senior he was the top-ranking student of his class but was denied membership in the scholarship honor society because of his color. His mother's advice, he recalls, saved him from acting on his impulse to leave school and abandon his graduation. Thereafter, through college and teaching days, in his work with the OSS during the war and later with the State Department, "My mother's words have guided me," he writes. "I believe they can help anyone who will remember and follow them."
