"Last evening our Legions, with their good General Sir William Howe, returned from a frigid excursion, to their winterements, almost time you'll hear, with 6 inches of snow upon the ground. In the return of the army, we took the Tatarallamals's advanced guard, 2 officers and 37 privates: many more I've an idea we shall be burdened with before the winter's out, to gourmandize our cherry locked ing pork, Benson's best Mess. Our right is at Middle Ferry, opposite side of the floating Bridge, on Schuylkill, our left at Derby, comprehending a great extent of country with store of Forage which we are this instant making love to. Mr. Washington has about 7000 men with their great toes sticking out of their Shoes like a toad in a boil; they are hutted at the Valley Forge, 23 miles from hence, and on the Schuylkill, he occupies the heights there. It has detached Mr. Smallwood, with 1500 men to Wilmington, Mr. Sullivan to follow, he has 500 militia at Frankford, under Mess. Bull and Armstrong, and keeps a kind of communication with each by small parties, upon the old plan, keeping up a defensive partizan war, to harass our forage and fuel parties, and cut off any supplies of provisions from the country, in order to starve 23,000 inhabitants, some thousands of which have wives, children and are related to those that are starving to distress them."
