ANTHONY CAMPBELL
Our readers will probably recollect this man from the circumstance of his having taken from the treasury department, in which he was a clerk, in violation of his duty and his oath, certain books of accounts, and in concert with Duane, making partial extracts therefrom of charges against Col. Pickering, for the purpose of impressing upon the public a belief that that officer held in his hands large sums of the public money unaccounted for.
This service rendered by Campbell to Mr. Jefferson's interest, though known to have been in direct violation of his duty and his oath, secured the smiles of presidential favor; and soon after that man came into power, Campbell repaired to Washington to demand his reward, it was probably thought not prudent by the president again to place him in a situation whose trust he had already betrayed, and therefore he gave him (reposing special trust and confidence in his integrity) a commission in the army.
We have not the result of this appointment. Like many others which Mr. Jefferson has made, it has turned out, as it ought, to the disgrace of him and his party. Such, however, is and ever will be the consequence of that mean and illiberal policy, which persecutes good men for their political sentiments and exalts to public employment villains who flatter and deceive.
Extract of a letter from an officer at St. Louis, to a gentleman in Bridgetown, N. Jersey, dated Jan. 22, 1805.
"Our commanding officer has at length returned from Fort Massac, where he has resided during his absence as president of a general court martial, and where Captain L. and Dr. S. were tried on charges made by the noted Anthony Campbell. The determination of the court as yet is unknown; but poor Anthony was arrested on the same charge of stealing books, the charge substantiated, and the court so favorable that they permitted him to resign, and the president has been requested to accept his resignation."
