Shining Noses
Can Be Remedied
BY HELEN JAMESON
(Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.)
It would seem as if the shining nose intends to live its own life, not care a thing how much of a nuisance it makes of itself. Even freckles get up and git sometimes. Fat cells can be starved to death and exercise will batten them down. But the beaming nose goes right on shining, like a good deed in a naughty world.
Afflicted young ladies do a good deal of blubbering about it. Well, there are ways of bringing it to time and reason.
DIMMING THE RADIANCE
The good old powder pad dims the radiance for the time being, then has to be whipped out again, especially in the summer season. It is the opinion of your beauty preacher that the frequent friction of the pad annoys the sebaceous and sweat glands and they riot worse than ever. Also, the powder may be of heavy consistency, with an oily base, and acts as an astringent. It is by giving the surface of the feminine nose a conditioning treatment before powdering that helps remedy the condition. And, tiresome though the thoughts of diet may be, there is the important matter of cutting down on fat foods.
The time may come when we will have special diets for our beauty ills, as we have now for hives and some other skin irritations. It is not just a theory that fat foods make the sebaceous glands kick up a fuss, it is a fact, as many a beauty quester has found out to her satisfaction.
Soap and water must be used freely, twice a day, if the skin is inclined to look buttered. Every particle of the soap must be rinsed away, first with warm water then with cold. The least bit of suds left on the surface of the skin will produce a shine; powder won't stick. So brush up the face washing technique.
REMOVE CREAMS
Be sparing in the use of creamy cosmetics; they don't help conditions, though a little may be necessary if the cutaneous covering becomes rough because of exposure to wintry weather. If you find the need of a cream, remove it within half an hour. Don't let it remain on overnight. It has been found that oils are picked up by the pores, stored away.
When the skin is oily, it is wise to remove makeup with a thin oil, then use soap suds. An occasional dry cleaning is a part of the treatment. Moisten a corner of your wash cloth, pour on a little eau de cologne, go over the flesh lightly. This will not only remove the film, but it will help to clear away blackheads. It is not wise to use any alcoholic lotion immediately after using soap when the skin is sensitive.
USE ICE CUBES
Compresses of ice cold witch hazel will bring a beaming nose to its senses. Place some ice cubes in a saucer, pour in some witch hazel, dip in the gauze and apply to the offending feature. This can be done immediately after the facial tubbing.
Only the dryest, finest, softest powder should be used. It should be fluffed on not ground in with the pad.
