Full Text

On Saturday last arrived here the Province Sloop Captain Scott, from St. John's in Newfoundland; having on board John Winthrop, Esq; Hollisian Professor of the Mathematics, &c. at Harvard College in Cambridge; who sailed from hence to that Place about eleven Weeks ago, that he might there view the late Transit of Venus over the Sun. It is probable the Public will soon be obliged with a particular Account of this Gentleman's Observations. At present we can only inform our Readers, that Mr. Winthrop was favoured on the Sixth of June with a fine bright Morning: and had the Happiness of viewing with all Advantage, a Phænomenon so long expected, and ardently desired by Astronomers, and so earnestly recommended by Dr. Halley to the diligent and accurate Observation of the Philosophers of the present Day: a Phænomenon, which perhaps no Man ever saw before, except Mr. Horrocks, an English Gentleman, more than a Century ago.

The Transit, we are informed, did not end at St. John's 'till upwards of Fifty Minutes after the Sun had risen: during which Time Venus was seen upon his Disk. It is likewise said, that Mr. Winthrop's Observations demonstrate a surprising Exactness in Doctor Halley's Tables and Calculations.
