PICK PADLOCKS AND SAW STEEL BARS
DEPUTY
SHERIFF
TIPPED OFF,
CATCHES MEN WHILE THEY
ARE AT WORK.
That a jailbreak did not occur at the county jail Saturday evening is due to the fact that the plot was discovered just in time, says the East Oregonian.
During the day three prisoners picked a padlock which separates the main corridor from the bathroom of the jail, and when found they were at work sawing on the same bar that was partly cut several weeks ago. In the bath room the bars are wider apart than in the main jail, and by cutting one bar a small prisoner could squeeze through. However, the escape would have to be made in the daytime, as the prisoners are placed in their cells at night.
The padlock to the bathroom was picked by means of a nail and the prisoners were using a saw that had been made from an old case knife. They declare they found the same in a corner of the room.
During the afternoon yesterday Deputy Sheriff Funk, who is in charge during the absence of Sheriff Taylor, received a hint of what was going on. He stationed himself where he could watch proceedings and soon discovered where the three men were at work. He then descended upon the plotters, and after stopping operations locked all of the prisoners in their cells.
