Thief River Falls—A United States copper cent for every year in which the government has turned them out is the aim of J. P. Curtis, Thief River Falls druggist, who is also an amateur coin collector. Mr. Curtis has all but 29 of the pennies of the total possible number of 140 since pennies were first coined by the United States in 1797. The first penny issued, as well as those for any years following, are about the size of a half dollar. Among other unusual coins in his collection are a $3 gold piece of 1856, two types of $2.50 gold pieces, silver three and five cent coins, a 20 cent coin of 1875, and a half cent coin dating back to 1825. While some of these coins are more valuable than the pennies, Mr. Curtis is particularly interested in completing his series of one-cent pieces. He has been collecting coins for more than 30 years.
