COLONEL STEPHEN D. POOL
ACCEPTANCE.
The following letter from Colonel Pool, accepting the nomination for Superintendent of Public Instruction at the hands of the Democratic Conservative party of the State, will be found to the point, and just such a one as we expected from the Colonel:

NEW BERN, N. C., April 20, 1874.

Dear Sir:—Your letter of the 16th inst., informing me that "At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Democratic Conservative party, for the State at large, held in this city (Raleigh) on the present inst., you are unanimously chosen as the candidate of our party for the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction," was received on the evening of the 18th.

I accept the nomination so cordially tendered, and should your action be ratified by a majority of the voters of my native State, I shall enter upon the discharge of the responsible duties of the office, with the fixed purpose so to perform them as to add to the efficiency of our system of Public Schools and to advance the cause of Education among all conditions, classes and races of our people.

To those who know me, I need not say, that in the performance of the duties imposed by the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, I shall, if elected, faithfully endeavor to carry out in the most effective and impartial manner, the laws in relation to our public schools, noting such defects as may become apparent, and suggesting at the proper time and place, such amendments as may seem to me necessary to make our system, in all respects, worthy of the age and the people of North Carolina.

Tendering to the committee my appreciation of the high compliment conferred upon me, and thanking you for the kindly terms in which you have notified me of their action, I have the honor to be, sir,

Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
S. D. POOL.

Gen. W. R. Cox, Chairman Executive Com., Raleigh, N. C.
