G-Men Wipe Out Al Brady's Gang
Bangor, Ind., Oct. 12.-(P)-Three of the midwest's most notorious gunmen died in a hail of bullets early Tuesday as federal agents wiped out the last remnants of the Al Brady gang.
Al Brady, 26-year-old Indiana desperado sought for a series of bank holdups and four murders, and his two companions, James Dalhover, 26, and Clarence Lee Shaffer, 22, both of St. Louis, were killed by the department of justice agents, working with Indiana state police.
Brady and his two companions went early Tuesday to a Sporting goods Store to buy Ammunition, The G-men stationed themselves on the opposite side of the street.
G-Men Open Fire
When Brady, Shaffer and Dalhover walked out of the store toward their car, the government men opened fire.
The gunmen whipped out their pistols as they dodged behind posts and parked cars. They blazed away in a return fire that for the most part was wild.
The firing went on for five minutes before Brady and Shaffer were killed before the horrified gaze of scores of Bangor citizens on their way to work.
In the killing'of Brady, the department of justice ended a career which they charge included the murder of an Indianapolis police sergeant, Richard Rivers, an Indiana state policeman, Paul Minneman, And Edward Linsey, a Piqua, Ohio, grocery clerk.
Raids Numerous Banks.
Brady also led in more or numerous raids on banks in the midwest, the officers said, He was known as a desperate criminal with a "nervous trigger finger."
The government men declined to discuss the detective work that led to the discovery of the gang's presence here.
Co-operating with the G-men was Walter Bekert, captain of the Indiana state police, who was called in by the federal men because of his detailed knowledge of the most famous of few remaining midwestern robber chiefs.
Among murders laid at Brady's door, or for which he was believed responsible, was the Sept. 27 killing of Patrolman George Conn near Freeport, Ohio. Three men-Charles and Frank Bird and James Widmer- escaped jail in Cleveland, Ohio, Sept. 17, and they have been hunted for the patrolman's murder.
Other Crimes
Other Ohio crimes charged to the Brady gang included, besides the slaying of the Piqua grocery clerk during a holdup, a bank robbery at Greenville, and jewelry store robberies at Greenville, Dayton, and Lima.
Brady has been No. 1 man on the federal"wanted" list'since a year ago Monday when, with the same two companions who were with him Tuesday, he escaped jail at Greenfield, Ind. Prices of $500 were placed by the department of justice on the head of each man.
As many as 20 men at a time have hunted the Indiana desperadoes.
Two Gangs Left
The Brady gang cleanup left only two well organized gangs of bank robbers at large in the nation.
The justice department has offered $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Hugh Gant and Alva Dewey Hunt, leaders of the Hunt-Gant gang in the south,
Federal Agents Also are seeking Charles Bird. 26. his brother Frank, 30, and James Widmer, 32, who escaped from Cuyahoga county jail, Cleveland, Ohio, Sept, 28.
Other public enemies high on the G-man' list include the kidnapers of Charles Mattson, later found dead, and the kidnapers of Mrs, Alice Parsons and Charles S. Ross; both of whom still are missing
