The desultory news and rumors of movements of Lee and Meade still find their way over the wires, to alarm the timid and puzzle the brains of the curious.

All accounts, however, agree that Meade if severely pressed, is equal to the emergency, and that he displays the qualities of a great captain.

If any confidence can be placed in the reports that reach us, Bragg is either preparing to relinquish the siege of Chattanooga, or he is changing his base of operations against the place upon a plan yet unknown to the outside world.

A mutiny of the Georgia troops in Bragg's army is reported, and that its suppression cost the lives of sixty of the malcontents, in addition to two hundred wounded. It is also stated that Bishop General Polk has been placed under arrest by Bragg. If those statements are correct, they denote a fearful demoralization in Bragg's army.

Later.- Our telegraphic news from the East to-day is not of an encouraging character. The rebels are concentrating their forces. and with the might and fury of desperation are forcing the Army of the Potomac back from the "sacred soil."

Washington itself is threatened, and its defenses are being strengthened in anticipation of an attack. A portion of Lee's left wing threatens Maryland and Pennsylvania. We may hourly expect intelligence of deepest interest from that quarter.

We have news from Schofield's and Banks' departments, which, although interesting, is of trifling importance compared with the more vital question of the safety of the National Capital and the movements of the great armies in Virginia.

From San Francisco we learn of the arrival of another addition to the Russian fleet in that harbor.
