More Than 150 Persons Turn Out To Make Veterans' Rally Successful

More than 150 persons assembled at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Buckingham county for the first annual Veterans' Rally staged by the American Legion Post 58 Tuesday, February 24. Post Commander Elmer Maki termed the event "quite successful," and announced that the organization hopes to make the affair an annual event.

The highlight of the program was an address by George E. "Fritz" Heller, department commander, American Legion, Department of Virginia. In his address, which followed the meal consisting of 30 gallons of Brunswick stew, Heller traced the founding of the Legion, discussed the status of veteran benefits and cited the many advantages afforded those who actively participate in the program.

J. E. Staton was the master of ceremonies for the program. He reviewed the work of the Buckingham post accomplished during the years since conclusion of World War II.

Another matter elaborated upon by the MC was the success of the teen age dance party held each Saturday night under the auspices of the Legion post. Dr. W. A. Pennington was cited for his outstanding contribution in making the teen age program a successful one.

One of the sidelights of the affair was a tour of the new facilities in the Memorial Hall—a completely-equipped kitchen and the installation of a central heating system.

Music for the occasion was provided by George Abbitt, Commonwealth's attorney in Appomattox, and several other visitors from Appomattox. Ralph Rainey and Joe Bryant were the stirring specialists in charge of the Brunswick stew.
