While the democratic county ticket has a few tears and rents in it and none of the faithful are willing to be the goat and make the race for the treasurership, the big tear that centers about Chief Martin and Court Clerk Winkler of the Gary city hall, who would be sheriff and county clerk respectively, will need a great deal of patching to make it presentable to the south end farmers.
Some eagle-eyed soul has discovered that neither the shrievalty candidate nor his colleague, the clerk aspirant, are tax-payers in the county. While this fact is regarded as a mere oversight by the constituency below the Wabash tracks, those who pay taxes will think otherwise. The democratic county ticket had enough punctures in it, but this one will be a severe stave into the ship's ribs.
Yesterday Mr. Winkler bought a new Pope-Toledo. A Pope-Toledo is a touring car and not a country estate. If one does not pay property taxes on it whatever impressions are cast by the spectators should be set aside by the fact that it gives one an air of influence and affluence.
No doubt Mr. Winkler bought the car to tour the county. It will enable him to get into touch with the people. It might also assist him in telling property owners that it is not passe any more for a county candidate to be a tax-payer. In any event if the chief and the city court clerk are adept in explaining they should overcome this slight embarrassment.

political embarrassment for democratic county ticket candidates due to neither being tax-payers in the county; requires patching to appeal to south end farmers and tax-payers.
Event Details
The Democratic county ticket faces issues, particularly with Chief Martin as sheriff candidate and Court Clerk Winkler as county clerk candidate, both non-tax-payers in the county. This is seen as an oversight by some but problematic by tax-payers. Winkler recently bought a Pope-Toledo touring car, which may help in campaigning but does not address the tax issue.
