Capital Punishment.—The Vermont Observer, we are sorry to see, like the Vermont Telegraph, taking ground against capital punishment for murder.—It is a perfect mystery to us how a man with his Bible in his hand can take such a strange position. Mere men of the world, controlled by their whims and fancies, may think they can improve on the enactments of the divine Lawgiver: but that a professed religious teacher should be so infatuated, is lamentable indeed.—Baptist Reg.
The foregoing paragraph is copied from the N. Y. Baptist Register into the Vermont Chronicle. The Chronicle has recently been 'defining its position' very distinctly in favor of man-killing for man killing.
The Telegraph has been read too much by the Baptists of Vermont to make it safe for the Observer to take that position before them at present. It might as well make no profession of Anti-Slavery. But whoever expects much from the Observer against violent vindictive punishments will be disappointed.
