Count Basie, His Orchestra And Connie Pack Auditorium
By ROBERT RATCLIFFE
If you saw steam oozing out of the City Auditorium Monday night and if you saw the old building leaning a little to the left and a little to the right, blame it on Count Basie and his musicteers. And don't forget to blame that charming piano queen, Connie Berry. She helped to jampack the old music hall with the Saturday night jitterbugs.
It was standing room only, and while we're talking about it. Southeastern Artists deserve much of the blame for bringing such a swell attraction to the Gate City. Long before 11 o'clock, the doors were shut tight, and only now and then were they opened to allow a few more hungry music-lovers to enter.
The joint really jumped. And so did the cash register. No official figures were released but keen observers thought 6,000 or more were in the building seeking a musical thrill.
It was, without a doubt, a three ring circus. What with a mass of swerving and weaving humanity twisting hips, white spectators encouraging the jitterbugs with two-bit pieces, flash bulbs popping all over the place, Joe Jones tearing up the drums, Jimmy Rushing tantalizing the crowd with those low-down blues, Connie Berry rippling the ivory with delicate fingers and the Count knocking out the boys and girls with that smack-down-and-step-on-me jive.
There'll be some more record-breaking nights, but hardly another like Monday night
