The grand moguls met in convention at the Opera House, on Wednesday, to nominate their Republican county ticket. Hon. Anson Pease was appointed chairman, and Henry A. Wise and Austin Hay, secretaries. After considerable mouth shooting, back and forward, as to how the balloting should be done, they at last got down to their work. The main point appeared to be to nominate men for the most important offices that either had plenty of money themselves or had relatives connected with the Hayes ring that would back them for any amount to make this campaign successful. 109 delegates were present, making it necessary for a candidate to secure 62 votes to make him solid.

The candidates for Representatives on the first ballot received the following votes: S. C. Conrad of Massillon, 64; T. C. Snyder of Sandy township, 36; J. L. Stanley of Washington, 15; Isaac Bachtel of Jackson, 2; Jacob Reese of Perry, 0; W. M. Johnson of Sugar Creek, 46; H. H. Housel of Plain, 21; J. Freese of Canton, 9; R. B. Porter of Lawrence, 3; J. K. Neisz of Canton, 2; J. E. Dougherty of Lake, 9. Conrad was declared the nominee.

Two ballots were had for the other Representative, when 110 votes were cast by 109 delegates, resulting in nominating T. C. Snyder, he receiving 75 votes; Stanley, 1; Johnson, 15; Housel, 16; Daugherty, 1; Walter Chance, 1.

On the first ballot for Sheriff, Chas. Reifsnyder of Osnaburg, received 14; C. F. Laiblin of Canton, 48; J. M. Webb of Canton, 15; Adam Gibb of Canton, 19; Simon Johnson, Alliance, 14.

On a second ballot being taken, C. F. Laiblin got 58 and was declared the nominee. The others stood as follows: Reifsnyder, 12; Webb, 7; Gibb 23 and Johnson, 10.

For Treasurer, John R. Dangler of Massillon, was nominated, he receiving 87 votes and J. M. Martin of Paris, 18; I. M. Allen, 1; blank, 1.

Henry W. Harter of Canton, was the nominee for Prosecuting Attorney, getting 85 votes to F. E. Case's 23; blank, 1.

The vote for Recorder stood, J. W. Barnaby of Alliance, 72; J. E. Perdue, Paris, 34; Impertus Martin, Canton, 1; blank, 1. Barnaby was declared the nominee.

For County Commissioner two ballots were taken. The second one nominated Washington Guest of Pike township, he receiving 66 votes; J. H. Sprankle, Osnaburg, 0; Frank Milhoff, Lawrence, 41; Henry McCann, Canton, 2; J. H. Brenner, Canton, 0; I. M. Allen, Perry, 2. Again 110 votes were cast.

For Infirmary Director, 102 votes were cast; William Barber of Canton, received 63 votes, and Geo. Schlebaug, Canton, 32; blank, 7. Mr. Barber declared the nominee.

About this time, as the most important offices had been filled, the hall presented a ragged appearance, each delegation losing three or four members who dropped out for fresh air and soda water (?). Two ballots were had for Surveyor, the second one nominating Wm. Unger of Paris township. The vote stood, Unger, 79; R. Z. Wise of Plain, 15; R. E. Wilson, Sandy, 1; E. Shelcon, Lexington, 0; blank, 1.

No name having been announced for Coroner James Brown of Lawrence, was proposed, but James declined the honor. Dr. J. P. Schilling of Louisville, was then announced, and as he was not there to either accept or decline, he was, on motion, nominated by acclamation.

NOTES.

The candidates nominated were called on for speeches, especially the Representatives, but they had skipped out to receive the congratulations of outside friends, and the convention was obliged to adjourn with nary a speech. It was remarked by a delegate that they were probably saving their wind as they knew that they had a terrible hard race to run.

The DEMOCRAT "reporter" desires to thank the President and Secretary for the honor shown him in allowing him to occupy a stand with the big wigs, on the stage, while the other "graphite destroyers" had to sit down in the orchestra. They beat us on lemonades though, but they paid for it themselves—at least they say they will.

Ed. Page was as busy button holing delegates as if he still lived in Stark. Perhaps he expects to move back. Wonder what assessments assistant clerks of the U. S. Courts have to pay for campaign expenses.
