Full Text
A late number of the Richmond Compiler contains the following animating passage:
"Now is the time for Virginia to put forth her resources. Let her show those who are not content with reaping the profits of her labor, that she can be her own manufacturer and her own shipper. With such a port as Norfolk, and such water-power as James River and her numerous streams afford; with her fine climate, her varied soil, her minerals, and her unrivalled watering places, what is to prevent her from being independent, prosperous and happy? Do it. Let us men look to it—let the people know her energies, and all resolve to rely upon themselves, and we shall be true to our own selves.
And it will follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man."
