I have frequently remarked, that when the scribblers in the Aurora are at a loss for new subjects of defamation, they indulge their murderous habits by attempting to depreciate the talents of the gentlemen who now preside at the head of the departments of state and treasury. It is rather singular, however, that in order to effect their purpose, they should be compelled to resort to the unmeaning expression of " successors in form," adopted by a man, whose abilities were never the object of envy—and to whose pretensions for honesty, I believe no person could be ambitious to succeed.
vi.
If the Secretaries of state and of the treasury, ably and faithfully discharge the duties of their respective offices, the public surely have no cause of complaint. Upon what principle, therefore, can Mr. Bache's correspondents pretend to say, that they are not equally entitled to an increase of compensation with the other officers of government? Is it because they are not members of some foreign philosophical society—or, rather, because, they prefer living on the scanty stipend allowed them by their country, to imitating the base examples daily exhibited by pretended patriots? Let the people determine.
Thursday last the Senators and Representatives in Congress of the State of Delaware, pursuant to resolutions of the Legislature, waited on the President of the United States, with the following address.
