Churches Consider Race, Labor Tensions

NEW YORK (ANP)—Underlying causes of present racial and industrial tensions and what the churches can do about them will be among the problems considered at the special meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America to be held in Columbus, March 5-7.

Some 500 ecclesiastical leaders from all parts of the country will attend the three-day session, which will review five areas of present-day needs confronting the churches: World Order, Community Tensions, Returning Service Personnel, Evangelism, and Foreign Relief.

These topics will receive detailed attention during the meeting with a view to drafting proposals for meeting the demands of the current situation.

Co-Chairmen of the section on community tensions in which racial and industrial problems will be discussed are Dr. Will W. Alexander, vice-president of the Julius Rosenwald fund, and chairman of the federal council's commission on the church and minority peoples; and Dr. Henry Sloane Coffin, former president of Union Theological seminary, New York, and chairman of the federal council's department of research and education.

Members of the council who will participate in the meeting are elected by the 25 constituent denominations and delegated to represent them. Presiding at the sessions will be Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam, president of the council, and Dr. Benjamin E. Mays president of Morehouse college, Atlanta and vice-president of the council.
