Full Text
It has been frequently charged that Thomas Ewing, in Somerset, in 1836, said, that "he called upon his God to witness that he never directly or indirectly speculated in scrip to the amount of one cent." Mr. Ewing denies ever having said so. He alleges that the expression was used in relation to the entry of Government lands, of which he had never entered any. It is certainly very strange that Mr. Ewing should so strenuously deny ever having entered any Congress lands, when, as we believe, he was never charged with so doing. No man would be so foolish as to charge another with having entered Congress lands, and expect thereby to fasten upon him the commission of a crime. Mr. Ewing's statements are not very reconcilable
Mr. Ewing declared in his speech here, that "he was no candidate." Consequently if the whigs have a majority in the next legislature, (which is not at all probable,) Solitude gives way to Kelly or some other lordling
