Burnside has also captured Cumberland Gap, so that East Tennessee is entirely rid of rebels for the present, and all their lines of approach pretty effectually broken. The possession of Chattanooga in importance to the campaign, can hardly be estimated. Its location is such that its loss must be more detrimental to the rebellion than the capture of Richmond. It is the northern terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railway, the southern terminus of which is at Atlanta, Ga., which place is also threatened by our forces and must soon fall. It is the eastern terminus of the Nashville & Chattanooga road: and forms the angular connection with the line of railroad from Charleston, S. C., to Memphis, Tenn. Being the terminus of two important lines, and the most prominent point upon a third, it was selected for the location of the founderies, machine shops, &c., for all their lines. Its capture therefore not only deprives the rebels of these works, but cuts their communication between the East and West. Burnside and Rosecrans can now hold command of the entire plateau of East Tenn. which is proverbially healthy, and capable from its own resources, of sustaining a large army. How seriously this will effect the rebel army, at Richmond, a few weeks will tell.
