HUNTING ACCIDENT
IN ISLAND LAKE

Careless Handling of Gun Brings Death to Island Lake Boy While Hunting

Mike Zetteman of Island Lake township, was found dead near his boat in a slough about forty rods from the home of his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Chytilek, in the town of Island Lake, Monday. He left the house Sunday morning to shoot ducks and had evidently been dead about twenty-four hours. From the appearance of the body it was apparent that he had used the stock end of the gun to push the boat out. The gun was a double barrel, hammer gun. Both barrels had been discharged, the shot going through his wrist, shooting his hand off and going on through his body just under the heart. Death was nearly instantaneous, although there was evidence of some movement after the gun was discharged.

The body was found by Mark Carlson and Henry Antell. The family had spent the evening at the home of a neighbor, Martin Dusa, returning in the morning. They slept rather late, and after they had had their breakfast the young man left with his gun. It was not until the following day that his absence caused any alarm. They went to some of the neighbors to see if he had been seen, and when informed that no one had seen him, a search was made.

After finding the body, the authorities were notified. County Attorney Pearson and Sheriff Urness immediately drove out to Island Lake. After interviewing all those who knew anything of the tragic affair the County Attorney decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Dr. Rumreich, coroner, is absent from home.
