Miss Dobbs To Display Voice Of 'Celestial Purity' In Concert

A voice of "celestial purity" will come home to Atlanta Thursday, March 11 when Miss Mattiwilda Dobbs, sensational coloratura soprano, appears in concert at the Wheat Street Baptist Church.

The description of her voice as one of "celestial purity" was made by the music critic of the famed London News Chronicle. Critics from Italy to Norway have expressed similar admiration. For example, France's Suzanne Demarquez said in the Musical Courier, "A Revelation! A voice of Immaculate Purity! Vocal virtuosity that makes light of great difficulties!"

Miss Dobbs, the daughter of John Wesley Dobbs (Grand Master of the Georgia Masons), began her vocal study under Naomi Maise and Wills James at Spelman College. She holds a master of arts degree in Spanish and, at present, sings in four languages other than English.

Following a stint as soloist with the University of Mexico's annual festival of music and drama, she was awarded a Marian Anderson Scholarship in 1947. Winning prize after prize and scholarship after scholarship, she went to Europe for study and, in addition to many other concerts, took first prize in an International singing competition.

One of the highest points of her career was her debut as "Elvira" in Rossini's "L'Italiana in Algeri," at La Scala, cradle of the opera.

Miss Dobbs' appearance here, which is guaranteed, incidentally, by her American booking agent, Sol Hurok, will be in the interests of the Wheat Street Church Building Fund. According to Dr. William Holmes Borders, pastor of Wheat Street, preparations are completely in order for her performance.

Tickets for the event are on sale at the following locations: The Cable Piano Company; the Yates and Milton drug stores; The Wheat Street Church Office; Morehouse College, Prof. G. L. Chandler; Clark College, Mrs. C. A. Chandler; Spelman College, Office of the Dean; Morris Brown College, Prof. G. J. Hubert; Howard High School, Miss Vagelle Goss; Davis St. School, Miss Evelyn Willis; Washington High School, Mrs. A. B. Hatcher; and Slater Elementary School, Miss Helen Lawrence.

Dr. Borders stated that he is expecting a capacity crowd to proffer Miss Dobbs a warm homecoming.
