WHAT about reorganizing
that fire department?
A novel plan that is
being worked out in eastern towns
was suggested to us this week
by way of getting men on the
fire department. These cities
equip each man's home, who
is a member of the depart-
ment, with a phone, so that at
any time of the night or day,
when he is at home, central
calls up each member on his
phone and announces the fire.
The city pays the phone rent,
and the families have the use
of the phone for private pur-
poses at all times. This method
in the way of organizing a
fire department would be very
little expense to the city and
in time would work out so that
we would develop a very efficient
corps of fire fighters from
these "call men."
