FAITHLESS
WIFE.

She Takes Up with Another Man-
A Shooting Scrape Results.

Chris. Hansen, a Dane and laboring man, who has been living with his wife in a cabin opposite the Eureka Con. dump for a year or so, went out to Ruby Valley early in August to work on a ranch. He was gone about twenty days, and on his return he found his home deserted and his wife gone. This was Thursday. He was told the story of her infidelity, and driven to despair he fell to drinking and drank until he became almost crazy. The women told him his wife had gone with Wm. Scherr, another Dane, to Secret Canyon and was living with him there. This is the story as Hansen tells it: He says Scherr had tried to capture his wife last Winter, but she repelled him, and he (Hansen) thought no more about the affair. Crazed with drink, Hansen went out to Secret Canyon on Monday to hunt for his wife. He went to Scherr's saloon, but instead of meeting his wife, who ran away, he encountered Scherr. He started in to charge him with ruining his peace by prostituting his wife, and used such terms of abuse upon him as came first to his tongue in his rage. A fight ensued, in which Hansen got several rough licks, whereupon seeing, probably, that he was getting the worst of it, he whacked out a Colt's army revolver and commenced shooting. He fired but one shot when parties interfered and put a stop to the row. The shot stunned Scherr for a moment, grazing his head and cutting the skin to the scalp from the forehead backwards. Hansen was hindered from running away after the scrimmage by Mr. Dougherty of Secret Canyon, who stopped him with a shotgun. He was then caught and bound tight with baling ropes until word had been sent to Officer Wallace, who went out, arrested him and brought him to jail yesterday morning at 3 o'clock. He is in terror of his life, thinking he has been guilty of a capital offence and that he will be hanged. This thought, with his constant dwelling upon his wife's conduct, has well nigh driven him daft. He says he never would have thought it of "Pete" (Scherr) or of his wife. He and "Pete" have been old friends from the days of the White Pine excitement, and he never would have believed he could doubt his wife. He is 48 years old and she is 39. He dwells affectionately upon her figure and face and says she is a fine woman. We agree with him that she is a daisy.
