A trim, motor-powered sailing vessel, the Reliance, home port, Friday Harbor, Wash., tied up at the small boat harbor a few weeks ago. On board is a family with hopes of settling in Alaska.
No newcomers to the North country are Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gray and their two children, John, who is 12 years old and Gordon, who is 4 years. The Grays have lived in North British Columbia and the Yukon Territory for nine years, and just over the glaciers in Atlin for some time.
Back in June of this year the family headed out to the North in their vessel from Seattle, and have since been cruising through the islands stopping to investigate possibilities for making a permanent residence.
Gray, a shipbuilder by trade who feels that there should be a field for shipbuilders in a country where fishing is a big industry, has hopes of establishing a boat building works in Southeast Alaska.
Young John Gray's schooling is not being neglected while the family is at sea. With his mother as "tutor" he is following correspondence courses. School for young Gordon is also on the way in the form of correspondence courses.
The Grays had little trouble sailing their 52-foot craft through Alaskan waters. Only difficulty encountered, according to Mrs. Gray, has been the children becoming seasick. They have become good sailors now, she added.
Tentative plans are to tie up here for the winter, Gray said.
