With the Memorial Day week-end behind us, this county has been spared, at least for the time being, the tragedy which usually marks a long holiday. While accidental deaths throughout the nation topped the 400 mark, here on the mountain top no one became an accident statistic--at least not within our county boundaries.

But with the summer months stretching ahead, there is still plenty of opportunity for tragedy unless caution is taken in traveling, boating, swimming or just plain relaxing. The danger of accidents lurks everywhere, especially when people are relaxed and "out to enjoy themselves."

Then, too, with the approaching end of the school term, hundreds of youngsters will be "on the loose"--and they are particularly prone to accidents through carelessness or juvenile daring.

Our recreational areas, and our highways, have been singularly fortunate in the absence of injuries and deaths attributed to accidents. Of course, these occur; but in view of the thousands of vacationers and residents using the facilities, the total is small.

At the beginning of the season is the time to pledge one's self to avoiding accidents--and to help others do the same.
