Attorney General of the United States.
A humble citizen thinks proper to address you. The public character with which you are clothed, excuses the liberty. As an accomplished orator, I have always admired you. Directed by genius and wafted upon your own dream of prophecy you have obtained a high public office. Have you stooped from your eagle flights, to mingle with birds, which dread the light of day? At the bar of a court, a few weeks ago, in the burst of your eloquence, upon a point respecting newspaper slander, you vindicated the cause of your own client, and gave hints of another IMPORTANT MATTER.
Your language then led to doubts. Your admirers said, you blamed the Edwards conspiracy. The friends of Mr. Crawford thought your language ungenerous, and that you meant to injure him before the jury, whom you were then addressing. Events have justified the latter suspicion. One conscious of your innocence in the Edwards plot, with the sanction of respectable authority, communicated to the Alexandria Herald, a note, which has been lately noticed in the National Journal, the newspaper of the secretary of state. He communicated the assertion, that you never authorized the signers of the celebrated and disgraceful Fourth of July letter, to say that you sanctioned the proceeding.
The Journal, now says that you did. If that paper has declared the truth I have been deceived in my estimate of your Character. You are then linked with the conspiracy, and your name has lost its glory. Your patron has been injured by his confidential advisers, and chiefly by one, who should never have stabbed HIM, under the fifth rib.
