GYMNASIUM FOR WESTERN STATE COLLEGE IN SIGHT
Building Program Authorized by Board Includes First Unit of Athletic Structure. Department of Mathematics Created. Utmost Harmony Prevails at Quarterly Meeting.

The long-hoped for athletic building for Western State College is in sight, following favorable action by the State Board of Normal Trustees, at their meeting in Denver last Friday, when they authorized a building program which will include the first unit of a real college gymnasium. This is the important news brought back by President Quigley and Dr. Russell on their return Sunday.

It has been one of the crying needs of Western, the lack of a proper hall for basketball games, other athletic events, and training places for young men and women in the physical education department. While other state schools have been putting up magnificent quarters—the university a gymnasium costing $350,000—the only college in Western Colorado has been compelled by lack of funds to use cooped-up quarters originally projected for a boiler room in the Central Hall basement. The Board of Trustees has recognized this handicap and wisely authorized the starting of what will be in time a splendid and complete modern gymnasium.

The first unit will, of course, only include the main floor for games, brick walls and a roof, but it will be large enough to answer the purpose for the present. It will be built in the most substantial manner as a permanent unit to which will be added training quarters, class rooms, athletic directors' apartments and other necessaries for both boys and girls, as the college grows. Every foot of it will be used from the start, both winter and summer, since physical training, both for college students and as it must be taught prospective teachers who go into the grades and high schools of Colorado, is becoming a very vital part of the curriculum.

While plans are not yet complete, and of course must be fully outlined by a competent architect and submitted to the Board for final approval they have been well worked out by the athletic committee, and it is known that the first unit will fall well within the accumulated building fund available, so that by fall, Coach Krause and the young men and women taking physical training may hope to have a modern home started.

One beauty of the proposition is that heat from the central plant is immediately available, and will form no part of the cost except installation.

Another important matter decided by the Board was the addition of a regular department of mathematics at the college—Prof. Darl W. Martin.

assistant professor of mathematics at Urbana, Illinois, the seat of Illinois University, has been selected to head the department, which will now be expanded and better organized.

The Board approved as well the retention of practically the same fine College faculty at Western for another year; and on showing of subscriptions paid to the Club House fund ordered its immediate construction.

It was also decided to purchase the north half of block 39, used last winter as a skating rink, as a part of the college campus.

Both Dr. Russell, newly appointed member of the Board, and Dr. Quigley were much pleased with the cordial expressions of good will and helpfulness exhibited by the Board, which promises great things for the future of Western State College this coming year.

Dr. Russell, of course, attended the meeting of the Board on Thursday, April 10th, when affairs of the State Teachers' College at Greeley, were taken up. Dr. George W. Frasier, of Greeley, who has been acting president since the death of Dr. Crabbe, was chosen as the head of that institution. Dr. Russell attended the assembly exercises at the Greeley school and gave a fine address, urging the cooperation of the two schools—an address which was well given and well received.

A noticeable feature was the entire harmony between Greeley and Gunnison at both meetings, the Greeley people being delighted with the unanimous selection of Dr. Frasier and favorable action by the Board on their outline of improvements for the Teachers' College.
