MIAMI. Fla., James Schaefer, 68-year-old retired machinist who lay helpless for two days under a broiling sun after suffering a paralytic stroke, was in serious condition in a Miami hospital today.
Schaefer suffered a stroke Thursday morning while sunbathing at Crandon Park beach.
All day Thursday and through Friday, he lay on the sand, unable to move or ask for help.
Hundreds of bathers played on the beach around him but none noticed his plight.
The sun shone hotly both days and temperatures climbed into the high 80s.
Finally, Friday evening, a group attending a church picnic saw that something was wrong with Schaeffer and called police.
He was rushed to a hospital in serious condition from the stroke and second degree burns inflicted by the sun.
