Taft Supporters Talk Of MacArthur For Vice Pres.

CHICAGO - Victory-confident Taft forces advanced a "MacArthur-for-Vice-President" line Saturday in the face of an Eisenhower camp prediction that this will "backfire with the delegates."
In Washington, Taft himself set the victory theme for his forces by asserting he has a majority of the GOP convention delegates and can win the republican nomination of the first ballot.
The talk that Gen. MacArthur is "receptive" to a vice-presidential nomination on a Taft ticket was peddled freely by Taft supporters.
But a leading Ike strategist said that "every delegation with a vice-presidential candidate of its own will turn away from Taft when it nears that MacArthur talk."
Another said that MacArthur is such a "controversial" figure his inclusion on a Taft ticket might alienate votes the senator otherwise would get in a national election.
But there was plenty of contrary feeling in the Taft camp-namely that MacArthur would be a powerful political asset.
