Have, for my own satisfaction, drawn out an account current between our most gracious Sovereign and the French king, from the commencement of hostilities on our part in the present war to the date hereof: and perhaps, Sir, it might be of some use to our ministers, to have somewhat of this kind before them when they come to treat of peace, that by seeing at one view, the losses we have sustained, and the advantages we have gained, during the course of the war, they may be better able to stipulate proper conditions. I have on purpose omitted the action at Bergen, because that is allowed to be a drawn battle, in which neither side claimed any advantage; nor have I reckoned in the list of ships of war, either our own or those of the enemy, that were lost or destroyed by storms or other accidents. I have likewise omitted the privateers or merchant ships taken on every side, as they are pretty near equal in number, amounting perhaps, to about 100 on each side, and it's impossible to ascertain their value.
