It is an old principle that it is hard to get men to do things that go against the grain. This may explain the fact that Judge Maguire did not pay his personal taxes until he was sued in the courts.
Now that it has been shown that Maguire was sued in 1894 for personal taxes, and that he has again been sued for a $5 tax on his law library in San Francisco, it may be assumed that he takes this course as a means of expressing his practical disapprobation of the custom of levying a tax on personal property.
Although he draws a salary of $5000 a year as Congressman and earns some money from his practice as an attorney, he has studiously refrained from buying real estate, which might be taxed under his theory, and he refuses to pay taxes on his law library, the only visible thing of his, because the tax is levied contrary to his theory.
A citizen who violates the laws of the State he seeks to govern sets a bad example to the youth of the land, as well as to his fellow men. Whatever may be Maguire's theories, the law of this State to-day levies a tax on personal property.
Of course it will be said by the apologists for Mr. Maguire that this is an assault upon him because he is a candidate for Governor, but we have simply commented on the facts as published in San Francisco. If Mr. Maguire objects to these things being made public why does he not pay his taxes like a man?
