Sunday night, about midnight, a man entered the small one-story house in Deering, just beyond Tukey's bridge, occupied by Mrs. Merrill who resides there all alone. The burglar coolly went to work to examine all the property down stairs and selected quite a quantity of articles which he thought came in his line, including silver-ware and a quantity of jewelry. He then proceeded up stairs, with a light, and coolly entered Mrs. Merrill's chamber, woke her up, and demanded ten dollars. The poor woman was frightened almost to death and declared she had not a cent in the house. The man then demanded five dollars, and ran down in his demands to one dollar, when he left the house. As soon as he was gone with his plunder Mrs. Merrill run to Mr. Houston's, a neighbor, who went out but the fellow had gone. He was evidently accompanied by a large dog for the prints of the dog's feet were close to those of the burglar's in the soft mud. The police were notified yesterday.
