MERCED, Calif., Jan. 14. —
Evidence that even thieves are not without honor came in a letter to the sheriff's office here from a burglar who claimed he was grossly misjudged
"I enclose a clipping from a newspaper," he wrote. "which says that $50 in groceries and $10 in cash were taken from a Merced store.
"I beg to assure you, gentlemen, that this is a d lie. I took only $5.07 in cash, a fountain pen and a ruby which is of no use to me. So here it is."
The ruby, bearing the emblem of a fraternal organization, was enclosed in the letter.
