This gentleman, who has been spending a few days in this city and neighborhood, departs for Washington this morning. Yesterday afternoon about two o'clock he made an address on the Balcony of the City Hall, to a crowd of people who had collected in State street, in which he thanked his fellow citizens for their kind attention. He said he did not come to this part of the country to make a show, or for any electioneering purpose, but merely to see the people and learn from personal observation whether what he had heard of them were true. He said he had been over persuaded by his friend John Thomas of Louisiana and he was now glad of it—to come to the east and see some of the manufacturing towns. He had been to Lowell and he wished every man in Tennessee could do the same, and learn what he had learned. He said we could be a better and a happier people, if our Senators and Representatives would travel about more, than they do. He alluded to South Carolina, and nullification, and said that he was proud that he did not belong alone to any town, county or state but to the whole country. He was of no man's sect or party. but for the constitution and the laws. He alluded to the course of the President, and reprobated it in strong language. In conclusion he again thanked his fellow citizens for the kindness and attention shown to him, and said he should ever remember it with gratitude. —He had come out in this way with reluctance, but was, on the whole, glad that he had had such an opportunity of expressing his sentiments.
The assemblage was very large, and had collected without preparation, by the accidental passage of the people at that hour of the day on Change, and his remarks were listened to with attention, interrupted occasionally by applause.—Boston Cour.
The New-York Gazette of Monday, speaking of Col. Crockett's departure for Boston, says:—" Previous to his departure he, spent an hour at the Thatched Cottage Garden, Jersey City, where he gave some amateurs in rifle shooting a touch of his quality in that way. He fired a few shots at forty paces, all of which were very good; among others, he fired at a two shilling piece, and drove the ball directly through the centre."
