By Captain Callahan, from Lisbon, we are informed they had Advice there from Cadiz, that three French Men of War of the Line, and four or five Frigates, had been off the Port of Sallee, in order to destroy it: but not having sufficient Depth of Water, they manned 12 Boats with upwards of 200 Men, proceeded up the River, and destroyed a Battery, a Row Galley, and some Craft; that afterwards, in going higher up, they were engaged by the Sallee natives, who lay in Ambush, and fired so briskly on them, as obliged them to strike their Colours: upon which some Hundreds of the Infidels immediately jumped into the Water, with their long Knives in their Mouths, to take Possession of the Boats; that the French, being apprehensive of immediate Death, hoisted their Colours again, fired and killed a great Number of the Turks, but being overpowered by Numbers, their Retreat cut off, and the greatest Part of them killed, the rest were made Prisoners, and their Boats destroyed.
